If you want to use Sinclair QL on other computers such as a PC, there is a range of emulators available.
A shareware emulator by Daniele Terdina running under Windows (a separate version is available for the Mac platforms). The shareware version for Windows runs at the speed of a standard QL with up to 384K of RAM, plus ability to handle QDOS floppy disks. Registering the software gets you a version which can run much faster, handles more RAM (up to 16MB), and extra facilities like TCP/IP, QXL.WIN handling, 256 colour Aurora graphics mode, and even the facility to use the Gold Card version of SMSQ/E (the emulator normally uses Sinclair QDOS or Minerva ROM images).

A freeware emulator by Jan Venema which is available in versions for DOS, Windows and Linux. Uses QDOS ROM images (Sinclair ROMs or Minerva). Supports MDV image and WIN devices for software, but QL floppy disk access is via specially written tools programs available with the emulator. Emulation speed is roughly that of a standard QL.

A further development of the QLay emulator by Jimmy Montesinos, available for Windows 98SE/2000/XP systems only. Freeware.

A further development of QLay by Jimmy Montesinos. This emulator is for Windows 2000/XP etc. Includes QL sound emulation and does away with the need to set strict timing mechanisms in QLay, plus allows faster emulation. Registerware - it is free to download and use, but you need to register the emulator (free of charge) with the author.

A commercial QL emulator for DOS (can also work on Windows) systems by Marcel Kilgus. The original version of QPC uses SMSQ/E running in DOS (or a DOS box in Windows), together with SBASIC, a much enhanced version of SuperBASIC. Now superceded by QPC2 for Windows systems, QPC1 can still prove useful to run on a DOS system if required.
The latest version of QPC, this is also a commercial emulator from Jochen Merz Software, offers 8-bit and 16-bit colour modes, TCP/IP, QXL.WIN hard disk filing system, reads Windows drives using DOSn_ device together with DOS and QDOS floppy disk reading and writing. You can tell it to run much more RAM memory than a standard QL (e.g. 128megabytes). QPC2 runs on all versions of Windows from Windows 95, although Windows 95 users would need a Winsock add-on for the TCP/IP drivers. The most expensive QL emulator, but probably the most widely used one.

A version of the original Linux uQLx emulator, reworked to run on Windows systems by Peter Graf and Phoebus R. Dokos. Lacks the TCP/IP system of the original uQLx. Needs the Cygwin distribution, which provides a Linux-like environment for Windows, to run this emulator on Windows. Get Cygwin from http://www.cygwin.com/

A plug in ISA card for a PC, containing a 68040 QL compatible system. Uses the SMSQ version of the QL operating system (supplied on disk with the emulator). This card was made and sold by Miracle Systems, but no longer made (although fairly commonly available as second-user hardware from auction websites and from some QL traders). There is also an optional SMSQ/E version of the operatign system. Uses the QXL.WIN filing system on PC hard drives, and can read and write QL and PC floppy disks. Much faster than a standard QL and speed is largely independent of that of the PC, unlike many software-based emulators.
